Though casting this mediocre screen hunk as an uptight businessman's alter ego was a stroke of pop genius for director Frankenheimer, it was Hudson's idea to have two actors play the lead, and his surprisingly thoughtful performance galvanizes this harrowing, cerebral thriller (and suggest Hudson's talents were under-utilized). While 23 may sound a little old to be coming of age, for a young woman infantilized by her mother, the timing makes sense. With its ability to capture and reshape the surface of reality, cinema is uniquely equipped to probe the complicated relationship between the visible world and the emotional and psychological truths that lie beneath it. Tensions run high between African American citizens and Caucasian cops in Jersey City when a teenage African American boy is critically injured by a cop. Yuma’s soft-as-a-whisper voice makes her seem more childlike than she actually is, and Kumashino’s day job as an advocate suggests changes are brewing. The film was later dubbed into Tamil and released as Andha Sila Nimidangal (In Those Few Seconds).
