Man, am I glad I knew nothing about "A Perfect Getaway" going in. Not only does this movie fail in its attempts to surprise, it also angers you with its blatant alterations of material that even the most indifferent of viewers has initially accepted in good faith.
This would be true if hikers in Iceland learned of a killing in Hawaii.

In a way, writer-director David Twohy confesses to dishonesty mid-film. But for every classy Hollywood whodunit there are a half-dozen projects that grow out of a script full of lies, yielding scene after scene that eventually get contradicted, all aimed at surprising, but always failing. Worst of all, it wastes the natural splendor of Kauai, that green, rugged, and most beautiful of the Hawaiian Islands. The movie is about two couples and a suspicious third couple. In the original scripted ending Steve Zahn's character Cliff Anderson does not try to pick up the gun and doesn't get shot. As Rocky tries to goad Nick into killing him, Gina gets Nick to back down. I love warnings about falling rocks. Nick and Gina accompany Cliff and Cydney along the trail under the presumption of safety in numbers.

My favorite is: Caution: Lava flow. (There's a newspaper clipping mentioning a couple wandering … Timothy Olyphant is convincing as a man who is impossible to kill, as is Kiele Sanchez as a woman who likes that aspect of his character.

Then, they find out when they get to a second island that a pair of serial killers— a man and a woman— are on the loose on the islands. Nick and Gina (Timothy Olyphant and Kiele Sanchez) travel lighter; indeed, the first time we see Nick, he’s only carrying a canteen, although later he produces a tent and a hunting bow.
You get the picture. Carrie, our casual movie-goer, reminds us all that cinema is in fact supposed to be fun and entertaining and that sometimes, just sometimes, happy endings are good.
