He tracks the thief to the VFW and sends in his drug addled punks to kill everyone and get his drugs back. It is nice to see some old time B list actors and even George Wendt getting to show their chops. VFW has a flow that keeps the audience engaged with each transition working to progress the story, even as the violence is cranked up to 11.Â, From the dynamic camera to the excellent use of practical effects, Joe Begos brings his unique style to the siege genre. The film is set at a run-down VFW post that has the misfortune of neighbouring a drug den. VFW plays out like the Senior Circuit version of The Expendables with a greater emphasis on ridiculously over the top violence. The only remedy is to cleanse yourself in the gallons of blood Begos gleefully coats the walls with.

It’s vile, slick with repugnance, and appropriately inhumane. It all feels fantastical and excessive and stupendously violent, and it totally worked for me.

And even with the relatively low budget on display, VFW gives viewers a brutally fantastic journey that brings just enough new to the genre to make it a must-watch for horror and action fans.Â, VFW is a B-Movie grindhouse throwback that combines the right levels of grit, blood, and fun to entice people of all ages. The seemingly last vestige of sanity in the city is Fred Parras’ (Stephen Lang) VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) hangout bar. I'm sure everyone involved with the movie, if confronted about the overt politicism of the film, will say it's just an action flick, but the movie certainly espouses a right wing conservatist view of homelessness and unemployment; I had to bring that up because it's practically all the main characters talk about. With the toilets broken, the wiring shot, and the place showing its age, the world around them is slowly falling apart as they wallow in the past. He’s always has this look about him like he utters the phrase “fucking do it” several times a day. After Bliss, Joe Begos’s previous film, VFW had a hard act to follow. I see them all the time and look forward to their horrible memes while I’m pooping. With a concept focused on ageing combat veterans fighting off hoards of drug addicts, it could have easily fallen into old tropes, or simply not gone for the jugular in a way that worked.

For them, it’s never too early to pour a drink, fawn at an aged exercise tape, or swap stories about “the good old days.” Busting balls and swapping stories are their currency, and we get to know each of them quickly enough to distinguish their personalities from one another. VFW is the best kind of throwback, calling concepts from movies like the landmark Carpenter classic Assault On Precinct 13, along with other movies of that ilk, while injecting a punk-rock style all its own. If you’re into “Splatterhouse Cinema” that respects its elders and tenderizes human bodies without remorse, Joe Begos has a pile of discarded corpses waiting for you. If you can stomach decapitations, impalements and a variety of creative death scenes, this will prove an entertaining check your brain at the door action piece.

A Grindhouse Punkrock Gorefest. What he doesn’t count on is that these old war vets refuse to die easily and a war between the street punks and tired veterans wages on in the parking lot of the VFW. As the turmoil of the assault progresses into the wee hours and the bullets run out, barstool legs and tennis ball grenades become standard tools of war.


It can’t quite live up to the punk-rock glory of its predecessor, but that doesn’t stop it from being a bloody good time. And thanks to the expert direction, these shifts never feel forced. Really fun movie without a lot of pretense. The cast is 100 percent dedicated to their roles and the story really holds your attention very well. Everyone regardless of race, gender or political views has a chance to shine, bringing with it buckets of blood, action and mayhem everywhere they go. Sorry, your blog cannot share posts by email. He’s got a real leading man’s presence and carries it with ease at 67-years-old. The slower segments even out very well with story development and progression. A group of old war veterans put their lives on the line to defend a young woman taking shelter in their local VFW post, who's running from a deranged drug dealer and his relentless army of drug addled punks. Well, guess that ought to help define what kind of audience might find the movie to be even slightly tolerable. Fred’s got backup from his squad, Abe (Fred Williamson), Walter (William Sadler), Lou (Martin Kove), Doug (David Patrick Kelly) and Thomas (George Wendt). Instead, their head erupts like a watermelon. I was unable to get it in for review but the second it was available in stores I made a (masked) Wal-Mart run to snag a copy. Made me want to play synth and buy neon signs.

Gamezeen is a Zeen theme demo site. Then you see VFW and realize it’s not a nostalgia thing. Finally, this film is very fucking bloody with some of the most entertaining kills I’ve seen in recent years. Beggos clearly isn’t working with a massive budget, but finds smart ways to conceal it such as basing most of the film in a dimly lit bar to hide some less than polished makeup effects.
