Quibi may be built around our second screens, but it tries to turn that second screen into a first one. Almost all of the good Quibi shows do this—and, yes, there are a few. In the second episode, she and her assistant Jared try to sell grocery shoppers on all-natural tampons, crystal granola, and a Napa Cabbage Patch Kid—i.e., a doll with an actual cabbage for a head. Quibi has gone on a buying spree for every famous person in Hollywood’s leftover ideas, which have been turned into “quick bites” of six to 10 minutes apiece. The fact that I had not previously heard of Punk’d guests Sabrina Carpenter and Liza Koshy (I knew Megan Thee Stallion, at least) marks me, of course, as an old. Please, I’m not that old.

The only documentary in a slate full of documentaries that feels like you could find it on another service is a tale of political corruption. This is the same MO as Netflix, but in Quibi’s case it means an almost-cliffhanger is upon you every seven minutes.

What does Quibi want, my undivided attention? Here’s our trailer for their docuseries Run This City. Volunteering to raise money by becoming the target in a human hunt suddenly becomes a valid life choice. But things improved once I navigated away from the reality shows and into the “movies in chapters,” as Quibi calls its serialized features. Survive (scripted) List slides. And yes, Hemsworth’s acting barely squeaks above bare minimum (though it’s fun to watch Christoph Waltz run circles around him in their scenes together). Correi rose to power quickly, joining City Council in Fall River, Massachusetts, at the age of 23. Then-city council member Jasiel makes mayoral moves. High-strung, perfectionistic, and irritating to everyone but each other, they’re over-the-top characters that the show throws in increasingly over-the-top circumstances. Download the Quibi app Download the Quibi app. In this not-quite-classifiable comedic spoof of a reality show, she plays a version of herself: Nicole Richie, daughter of Lionel, wife of Joel Madden, wellness influencer, and wannabe trap music star.
It’s one of the few shows that really feels like it knows it was shot for an iPhone, by which I mean it doesn’t even try to include the wide shots that will never look good vertically, and it’s extremely claustrophobic as a result. The big swerves at the end of every episode fit in with what Forte and Olson do best: taking their characters way, way too far. This won’t be news to anybody following the music scene, but the show is good at describing in quick strokes how music stars’ careers are made of distinct building blocks.
I also guffawed at one of the episodes of the rebooted prank show Punk’d—the only one that featured a celebrity I had heard of.
