Start Shopping. As silly as that is, there are a lot of exciting close calls with the Nazis that make this a decent suspenseful espionage thriller.
Jean-Pierre Aumont (billed simply as Pierre Aumont) makes his American film debut in Assignment in Brittany.Set during WW2, the film casts Aumont as Free French captain Metard, who bears a remarkable resemblance to Bertrand Conlay, a prisoner of the Allies whom is suspected of being a fifth columnist.

In fact, after only one more film in Hollywood, Cross of Lorraine (1944), he returned to fight with the Free French.

Although Anne appears happy to see Metard, whom she believes to be Corlay, she tells him that she cannot marry him because of a past infidelity. Though a number of civilians refuse to betray Matard (and are shot), Plehec's young nephew Etienne (Darryl Hickman) identifies him. As wartime spy films go this is a pretty decent one even if it is not exactly nuanced.

By the end of 1943, when it had ended - due to loss of ships and air support, the Germans had sunk 3,500 merchant ships enroute to the United Kingdom and Russia.

After two years under German rule, a small Norwegian fishing village rises up and revolts against the occupying Nazis.

Bertrand Corlay/Capt Pierre Metard Jean-Pierre Aumont. And genuinely, one of the best upper-tier B movies that I’ve seen in a while. At the castle, Elise confirms that she is a Nazi collaborator and tells Metard that the submarine base is in St. Lunaire. While the film is solid, it lacks flair and the gruesome Nazi tactics comes across more as routine than emotional. After a career criminal is recaptured and knows he faces the guillotine, he offers to exchange his life for 100 hostages slated for execution by the Nazis.

Joining him in the film are Margaret Wycherly and Susan Peters as the collaborator's wife and girlfriend and Signe Hasso (in her U.S. debut) as his mistress. After French Resistance contact Louis Basdevant is unmasked as a turncoat, Matard forces him at gunpoint to get him into a heavily guarded town. Even in Hollywood, he supported the war effort, appearing at special screenings of Assignment in Brittany, to help raise funds for the Resistance.

He comes out of this film with his dignity intact. At the time "Assignment in Brittany" was being made, Germany's blockade of the Atlantic was in place.

This new list is long overdue. With the help of Kerenor, a priest, and other sympathetic villagers, Metard escapes from Holtz's jail and hides in the catacombs of the local church.

My only problem with it is that the premise is so outlandishly unbelievable it's takes some effort to invest in the story. When Matard refuses to tell Captain Hans Holz (George Coulouris) the location of the wireless, he is tortured for days.

In a world that seems increasingly out of control, with rampant newly fortified racism in my country (USA) and global fascism on the rise (and that really is just the tip of a long list of terrible troubles today), it just feels right to watch some Nazis get wiped out. That said, was a real page turner.
