Sense and Sensibility is a classic novel written by Jane Austen. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon.
My only negative point being that I got so engrossed (much more so than when reading the paper book), and the story is quite black and miserable through much of its length, that I am sure I felt miserable with Marianne, until I had got to the uplifting ending. The Mill on the Floss is one of the great works of English literature.
Juliet Stevenson's narration is terrific. The way marriages are formed more for financial gain and status rather than love or romance.
All three sisters along with their mother Mrs. Dashwood move to a tiny house in another town.
With her wry insight into the English middle class, Austen shows that the best man isn't obvious.
I think it is the medium of audio that affected my enjoyment of this book.

All in all, the narration does not subtract from the text, if anything she adds to the experience. When Fanny’s bro Edward quietly appreciates Eleanor Dashwood, Mrs Dashwood unwisely means their shared sensations and also Fanny action in to separate them. As soon as the estate mosts likely to their insipid bro as well as his unscrupulous wife, the women and their mommy are gotten rid of to a cottage with none of the graces inherent in their former life.
She is the voice of Jane Austen.
When she is invited to stay with the beguiling Henry Tilney and his family at Northanger Abbey, she expects mystery and intrigue at every turn. The story is of course typical Austen: predictably satisfying, tasty in that happy-endings-happen-to-good-people kind of way.
Juliet Stevenson has done a masterful job not only reading Sense and Sensibility, but also giving the characters vivacity and personalities.
Jane Austen writes with great sensitivity and compassion about how two sisters adapt in different ways to life's blows. Genteel dinner parties and romantic walks through luxuriant Devonshire draw two attractive sisters into the schemes of landed gentry set on "marrying up."
Mary has to prove her lover's innocence without incriminating her own father. I don’t usually read historical type romance or period drama etc.
Sophocles. I bought it to supplement a [printed book & ran into a sentence about Emma's mom.....mom?
The subject matter is, once again, upper class British society as well as just how money, land possession, titles, and also excellent appearances influences who you marry much more than love; as well as just how a female’s livelihood depended so much on the men they wed. It just...doesn't contain at least half the story.
The characters are also well written and you get a feel for The main heroine Elinor, also her sister Marianne and their mother Mrs Dashwood. I suspect she may have been influenced by Emma Thompson's screenplay in her delivery of a couple of the minor characters -- but why try to trump gold?
Jane Austen is one of the finest writers in the English language, and this volume includes all six of her classic novels. Please try again. But what makes it even more pleasurable for audio book readers, is Juliet Stevenson's exceptional narration.
Pride and Prejudice might be my favourite Jane Austen book, but I think this is my favourite Jane Austen audio so far. (P)1995 Hodder and Stoughton Audiobooks.
I bought this as 'comfort' listening for my long commutes to and from work, and it was indeed very comforting. Sense and Sensibility was a lovely story, Jane Austin really makes you feel like you are living back in the old world amongst her characters.
She imbues the characters with life - makes them 'jump off the page' (I guess that should be 'jump out of the speaker').
I had not review Sense and also Perceptiveness for many years as well as recently chose to huddle one afternoon with this edition. Don't be afraid of Jane Austen, she is a joy to read.

There is something horribly wrong with this specific version of the book.
The relationship between its heroine, Maggie Tulliver, and her brother, Tom, closely resembles that of George Eliot and her own brother, Isaac. Countess Ellen Olenska, separated from her European husband, returns to old New York society.
She understands each character and brings them to life in turn. In a couple of novels the (feasible or real) entailment of an estate away from a deserving other half after the fatality of a beloved spouse is that situation. This is the first Jane Austen book that I have read. 19th Century, Classic Literature, Classics, Fiction, Historical, Historical Fiction, Literature.
At the tender age of 10, Fanny Price is 'adopted' by her rich relations and is removed from the poverty of her home in Portsmouth to the opulence of Mansfield Park.
Their sibling means well yet remains in thrall to his partner Fanny that regulates him and the handbag strings, and the Dashwood females are provided just a ration to survive, as well as no enhancement to their dowries.
While not a veteran of the trenches, this superb story--or rather, this superb reading of this superb story--got me through a very painful bout of bedridden illness.
I will refrain the minutiae of story, yet this, along with “Persuasion” and “Pride and also Prejudice,” are very pleasing checks out. I feel as if I am in 19th century Britain while listening and by the end of the novel feel as if Eleanor and Marianne are people I have known well.
I must say that it took a while to get used to the language used but I got the gist of it. Marianne's raptures made me smile and the vulgarity of Mrs. Jennings made me giggle uncomfortably in a way that simply reading the book never has before. Mansfield Park: on a quest to find a position in society, Fanny Price goes to live with her rich aunt and uncle. It is much less polished than the later, traditional “Pride and also Bias”, yet it consists of all the familiar components we expect and appreciate in an Jane Austen story. I love this book even more since listening to her narrative.
And yet, she captures the spirited exclamations of Marianne, if a trifle stressed, and the affectations of the Steele's in an unobtrusive manner.I'm always amused by attempts of narrators of one sex to perform the part of the other, but Stevenson is not unduly lacking in credulity for such performances. and others, Narrated by: The Jane Eyre read by Amanda Root is the best audiobook I have ever listened to, and this is in the top 10. $14.95 a month after 30 days.
