I’d already written my record at that point. BC: I was sort of being sarcastic when I wrote [the 2009 Atlas Sound song] “Shelia”. [Deerhunter] had done this tour in Europe, and we somehow ended up in Iceland, and that’s where the idea for “Jet Out of the Tundra” comes from. Looking at the venues for the upcoming British tour, it looks as though you’ve moved up a notch. All Music says The Flood Light Collective takes its nam after one of your first bands. This was probably a year or so before Cryptograms came out. A lot of people complain about that side effect, but I love it. Well, after your first album came out, you went on a massive tour with Deerhunter for Halcyon Digest, where you’d open up a lot of shows singing “Desire Lines”. Others might be a demo that Brad, Josh, or I will introduce and the song will remain exactly as is, or it could be completely changed into a collaborative effort. We kind of wanted it to have an old and haunted vibe in regards to the production of the songs. Featuring contributions from Stereolab’s Tim Gane and Broadcast’s James Cargill, the record is both sonically adventurous and, perhaps most strikingly, incredibly intimate. I feel guilty a lot of times, because I get to see as much as I do, but it’s a huge part of what makes me write music. Is there a main songwriter, or do ideas come from all corners, then get worked up collaboratively? Pitchfork: Was there ever a period when you thought you wouldn’t make another Deerhunter record or that you’d stop making music? When I get it really right, I’ll leave it alone. L: Not as of yet. And then me and Ben Allen, the producer, were talking about the aesthetics of the director, BC: Nostalgia comes and goes, focuses its energy on different pockets. But it’s a song where I feel we’re talking to each other the most; [its] kind of like our centerpiece, our mission statement, as a band. I put it somewhere. Some time within the last year and a half it was possible to make a living doing what we do. It is a very “fall of the Roman Empire” kind of thing, where it feels like there's not much left to do. When writing a song and trying to make it “formal” from the beginning, it can become a lot harder to get through. I recorded myself in my room and played all the instruments on it. BC: It erased all illusions for me. It really doesn’t allude to that, but I didn’t want to write a… I didn’t want it to be sad. I think it’s taken for granted how much they bring to the band; people might notice that I write the majority of the songs, but there’s a lot more to it than that. But unlike so many of their early contemporaries, who have either petered out or suffered diminishing creative returns, Deerhunter have managed to become more alluringly strange over the last eight years. We did a TV show there in Manchester with Liars, hosted by a guy named Frank Sidebottom. Even die-hard Deerhunter fans sometimes ask, “Lotus who?”, but that’s poised to change this year for guitarist Lockett Pundt. I had no idea what to expect going into that.
