The AML Portal is a partnership that spans federal, state and local efforts to reduce the environmental and health risks of abandoned land mines through increased awareness, education and action.
However, because this map only includes mines that are truly abandoned AND which have been catalogued by the federal government, this map is probably not a complete inventory of the abandoned and inactive coal mines in the US. There must also be no other individual, firm or organization responsible to reclaim the site.
The map shows areas of active and historical coal mining in both underground and surface mines, with separate colors for auger and highwall mining. Virginiaâs Abandoned Mine Land (AML) Program was established in the late 1970âs to correct pre-federal Act (1977) coal mine related problems adversely impacting public health, safety, general welfare and the environment.
