Jamaica is a dangerous place, and has been for a long time. and others.
(That gives you an idea of the language in the book.)
It takes in drug gangs politics and ‘the singer’ Bob Marley. It challenges the sacred tenets of the United States Constitution, urban life, the civil rights movement, the father-son relationship, and the holy grail of racial equality: the black Chinese restaurant. Louis Moore,
Soon Wash is initiated into a world where a flying machine can carry a man across the sky, where even a boy born in chains may embrace a life of dignity and meaning - and where two people, separated by an impossible divide, can begin to see each other as human. Overall Marlon James is a great author and very descriptive with is work.

The book was way too long and just boring.
Main criticism is the number of re-recordings - all at a different pitch which the really drew attention to the method and not the story.
By: Events are not examined directly, but are fractured and referred to much later. "A Brief History of Seven Killings", oh where do I start?
Interesting topic (recent Jamaican political history/gang wars & the attempted assassination of Bob Marley), with most characters based on real-life figures, and the writing shows flashes of brilliance.
This novel is driven by voices, so listening to it makes perfect sense, and the actors here admirably present the various narrators.

It reminded me of Lawrence Ferlinghetti's poem 'Constantly Risking Absurdity':Constantly risking absurdity and death whenever he performs above the heads of his audience ..."James puts it all out there.
Who cares, you may ask.
Jane McKeene was born two days before the dead began to walk the battlefields of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania - derailing the War Between the States and changing the nation forever. This is a book full of unbridled ambition and certainly not for the faint of heart (and by that I don't mean specifically because of the violence) given the complex cast of characters, use of patois for the dialogue of the Jamaican characters and the sprawling Jamaican history that James relies on to propel the narrative.
Paul Beatty, Narrated by: Tech City: Society is obsessed with relentless progress and the possibility of eternal life.
What happened to the female Columbian drug dealer?
I doubt that unless you were born Jamaican you could understand the slang of the streets as produced so vividly by James.
Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. Jamaica, 1976 shortly before the presidential election.
I think it will be a college taught title in short order that will be called a classic.
Jesse Eisenberg,
Korede is bitter.

It was like this Irish trying to be Jamaican thing.)
Richard Hollingham, Their humanity is laid bare for the reader to see and as such I often felt sorry for some of them despite their actions.
This is such a great story with outstanding presentation. Fifteen years later I went looking for it, instead, I met a Rasta man I was instantly drawn to--it seemed ordained--we married and lived in Philadelphia.
I almost feel like going back and reading it now.
I have zero interest in Bob Marley and hence hesitated to read this.
Also, I was intrigued by the plot line; the assassination attempt on Bob Marley ("the Singer") in the 80's. I was fascinated, I was engaged, I laughed, I cringed, and I cringed again.I only have one issue, and it drove me to distraction and I don’t understand how it passed editing. Still, it is an epic story and one with universal themes that will resonate. $14.95 a month after 30 days. By:

BUT.
Jane McKeene was born two days before the dead began to walk the battlefields of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania - derailing the War Between the States and changing the nation forever.
A romantic drama exploring the potentiality of transhumanism, Life Ever After is a rich listening experience that is at once naturalistic and poetic.
We're now living in Jamaica, celebrating our 22nd loving year together.
Several days before the event, there is an assassination attempt against the Singer by 8 gunmen.
This is a specifically Jamaican narrative about a particular time in history and the dynamic of a particular group of people. The best book I have ever read. I was reading AND listening at the same time, and it was just hard going the whole way through the book.
For me it was just too long. However amongst the gangs, politics, drug cartels and poverty it also contains the astounding and true story of an attempted assassination of a music legend, a huge insight into how everything impacted on the future, and most of all really engaging characters.

There are definitely some graphics that I could have done without.

This is probably my own fault for trying to listen to a Man Booker prize winning book (rather than reading it) but I cannot for the life of me follow this story.
The edits in this are MANY and they are jarring.
Don't be daunted by the start, once you get used to the accents you'll appreciate how fresh and rich the writing is - best novel of the year for me and really well read.
This book is a critically important book to read, especially for those interested in Jamaica in particular, and the forces impacting on our world.
The story is really confronting, and the violence is graphic, but knowing that a lot of what went on is true is the most surreal part?!
